Bio:
A/Prof. Sebastian Waldstein was Associate Director of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Ophthalmic Image Analysis between 2013 and 2019. A leading scientist in artificial intelligence in retina, he has contributed substantially to the field since being involved in founding the laboratory in 2012.
An MD graduate of Innsbruck Medical University with externships at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Oxford, Oslo and Zurich, Prof. Waldstein holds a PhD in medical physics obtained from the Medical University of Vienna. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist, retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon. In 2016 he was appointed “Privatdozent” in ophthalmology, and in 2020 Associate Professor at the Medical University of Vienna. From 2020, he serves as Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Mistelbach Hospital, Lower Austria.
As PI of interdisciplinary research projects developing prognostic computational models for individual risk prediction in patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration, and PI of two industry-funded grants for machine learning in OCT of macular degeneration, Dr. Waldstein has strong experience in working with industry and in multi-national collaborations.
